How much lighting is recycled?

Data last updated on July 21, 2026

This page presents data about lighting recycling in Ontario, including the weight of lighting supplied and recycled, refurbished or reused year-over-year.

Ontario’s recycling laws require businesses to report this data to RPRA, as the regulator responsible for enforcing these laws. The reporting of this information helps ensure lighting is properly collected and recycled, refurbished or reused—and that valuable resources, like glass and metal, are kept out of landfill.

RPRA updates this page annually. The data reflects what was reported as of July 21, 2026, and is subject to change.

Lighting supplied from 2018 – 2024

Businesses that supply lighting in Ontario must report the total weight they supply into the province each year to RPRA. The lighting you buy at a retail store—like LED or halogen light bulbs—are a part of the total amount that businesses supplied into the province.

Notes:

  • 2018 is the first year of lighting supply data that was required to be reported.
  • 2024 is the most recent year of lighting supply data because the data is reported to RPRA two years after it is supplied.

Lighting recycled from 2023 – 2025

When you drop off your used lighting like a light bulb at a recycling location, they’re collected and sent to facilities where they are sorted and processed or broken down into different materials. From there, valuable resources, such as glass and metal, are recovered and used in new products or the lighting is refurbished to be used again.

Businesses that supply lighting in Ontario are required to collect and recycle, refurbish or reuse them once consumers are finished with them and report the weight of lighting they recycle or refurbish each year.

Notes: 2023 is the first year of lighting recycling data that was required to be reported.
